Mama

Please take the time to visit your loved one in a nursing facility. Tomorrow may never come. Today I will dedicate my post to my mama who is slowly leaving us. Dementia is a cruel thing. Mom’s end of life dementia is eased with the correct medication that seems to lessen the hallucinations but she is living “back in the day” now and appears in the “today” every now and again. The portrait is she and I together and the other 2 are of 2 lovely ladies who have now passed. I had the pleasure of photographing the elderly in the nursing home by natural lighting.

Living With Dementia

She’s trapped inside the prison wallsThat used to be her mind. The woman that she used to be, Has long been left behind. There are times she’s quite alert, Her memory’s still intact. Then there are days when she disappears, And we know it’s not an act. No longer able to care for herself, We couldn’t leave her alone. Her safety had to be assured, So we placed her in a home. Good days are when we visit her,A nd she calls us by our name. She’s grateful for the company, And thankful that we came. Most of the time it’s difficult, To see our Mom that way. All we can do is love her now, As we take life day by day.
